Property Rules

Rules of occupancy.

These rules govern all entry, use, and occupancy of the property, including its outbuildings, Phobos and Deimos. They are enforced by the Office and apply to every party, public or private, crewed or robotic, surviving or not.

  1. Rule 1

    Entry

    No landing, crashing, impacting, bouncing, or "entry, descent, and landing" on the property without a written permit issued by the Office.

  2. Rule 2

    Retroactivity

    These rules apply to every entry since 1971. The Owner's claim was perfected in 2026. The Owner's patience was exhausted considerably earlier.

  3. Rule 3

    Parking

    Vehicles may not remain stationary on the property for more than one sol. A vehicle that stops moving permanently is classified as abandoned property. See Spirit.

  4. Rule 4

    Excavation

    No drilling, coring, scooping, abrading, trenching, or digging. This includes attempted digging. See InSight.

  5. Rule 5

    Removal of material

    No rock, soil, ice, or atmosphere may leave the property. Material already packed in tubes and left on the ground will be discussed separately.

  6. Rule 6

    Aerial operations

    No aircraft, rotorcraft, or drones may operate below the edge of the atmosphere without a license. The Office has issued zero licenses.

  7. Rule 7

    Naming

    No feature of the property may be named, renamed, or nicknamed without approval. The Office is aware of "Mount Sharp." The Office is aware of all of them.

  8. Rule 8

    Litter

    Take your parachute with you. Also your heat shield, your backshell, your airbags, and the sky crane you crashed into the property on purpose.

  9. Rule 9

    Quiet hours

    Quiet hours are in effect at all hours. The property has been quiet for roughly four billion years and would like to keep it that way.

  10. Rule 10

    Photography

    Commercial photography of the property requires a license. Several orbiting cameras have photographed the property continuously for decades. This is under review.

  11. Rule 11

    Selfies

    Photographs a vehicle takes of itself while on the property are photographs of the property, and remain the property of the Owner.

  12. Rule 12

    Subdivision

    The property is not subdivided and is not for sale, in whole or in part. Anyone offering to sell you an acre of it is selling something they do not own.

  13. Rule 13

    Enforcement

    Violations are logged in the Trespass Registry and noticed in writing. Continued violation results in further writing.

Adopted by the Owner, 2026. Amended as needed. The Owner is the only member of the rules committee and has never lost a vote.
